RUSSIA TO ESTABLISH NUCLEAR PLANT IN A WEST AFRICAN COUNTRY.
A Russia’s state corporation that specialises in nuclear energy and high-tech products, Rosatom will be building a nuclear reactor in a country in West Africa.
Already, the West African country, Burkina Faso is in the process to finalize a nuclear deal with Russia for the construction of a nuclear-powered facility.
Both countries have started signing a road map to building a nuclear reactor in the West African country.
This move goes to strengthen plans of Russia’s ambition in increasing its influence on the African continent.
The Burkin Faso’s Minister of Energy, Mines, and Quarries, Yacouba Zabré Gouba highlighted the benefits of the deal, which included a reduction in energy deficit and a socio-economic boost.
Zabré Gouba relayed that his country intends to partner with Russia on a nuclear deal.
He spoke in an interview on the sidelines of the International Forum on Nuclear Energy, which took place in Sirius Federal Territory, Russia.
"The establishment of this power plant will initially help reduce the energy deficit and eventually support all sectors of Burkina Faso's socio-economic life," the energy minister stated.
Already, Rosatom is expanding its African footprint, with partnerships in Nigeria, Tanzania, and beyond.
Russia’s recent nuclear initiatives in Africa
Rosatom has been on a mission to penetrate the African market.
This was due to the fact that the continent has enormous economic potentials.
Already, Russia has established relations with some countries on the continent, including Mali, Zimbabwe, and Burundi.
Nigeria too is also in this mix because it recently stated its ambition to join the BRICS group of nations and collaborate on nuclear energy projects with Russia.
A recent report had revealed that Russia and Nigeria are implementing direct steps to ensure this nuclear partnership and are also training individuals.
The Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission and Russia's Rosatom are striving to speed up the process.
