PUTIN SWORN IN FOR A FIFTH TIME TO DO ANOTHER SIX YEAR TENURE 






Russian President, Vladimir Putin has taken oath of office for the fifth time for another six-year term.


The ceremony took place in Moscow and was attended by Russia’s political elite but boycotted by the UK, US and most European envoys.


With the swearing in, Putin is likely to be in power for a cumulated period of 30 years.



Putin spoke and claimed mandate for a foreign policy he pursued that had left tens of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians dead in a war that had lasted two years.



He said: "You, citizens of Russia, have confirmed the correctness of the country's course. 


"This is of great importance right now, when we are faced with serious challenges.


"I see in this a deep understanding of our common historical goals, a determination to adamantly defend our choice, our values, freedom and the national interests of Russia."


Putin is  71 years old and had dominated the domestic political landscape. 


In Russia, under him, all leading opposition figures are in prison or exile.


Putin's best known critic, Alexei Navalny, had died suddenly in an Arctic penal colony in February.


Yulia Navalnaya, the late dissident's wife had urged supporters, in a video on Tuesday, to keep up the struggle against Putin.


She said: "With each of his terms, everything only gets worse, and its' frightening to imagine what else will happen while Putin remains in power."


On the international stage, Putin is locked in a confrontation with Western countries.


He had accused them of using Ukraine as a vehicle to try to defeat and dismember Russia.


So, at the swearing in ceremony, Putin told Russia's political elite that he was not rejecting dialogue with the West, including on nuclear weapons.


"The choice is theirs: do they intend to continue trying to restrain the development of Russia, continue the policy of aggression, incessant pressure on our country for years, or look for a path to cooperation and peace?" he said.
