 MAYOR OF PORT HARCOURT, HONOURABLE ICHEMATI PAYS VISIT TO RUMUWOJI MARKET, FROWNS AT THE CONVERSION OF TOILETS TO SHOPS, ORDERS CLOSURE FOR IMMEDIATE RETURN TO ORIGINAL PURPOSE.




The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (Mayor of Port Harcourt), Honourable Ezebunwo Ichemati, yesterday, began the inspection of the facilities under the management of the council, and his first port of call was the popular Rumuwoji (Mile I) Market.


Led on a tour of the Market by the National President of the Reformed Traders Association, Ambassador Eddy Bright, and the Chairman of the Rumuwoji Traders Association, Chief Godspower Omunakwe, the Mayor frowned at the conversion of 12 out of the 16 toilets in the market to shops by the past council administrations. 












His displeasure was heightened on seeing that these traders sell food stuffs with the water closet (WC) and urinals still inside the toilet with stench of faeces and urine coming out of them. 


He described the act as unhygienic and a breeding ground for the spread of infection and disease while ordering for the immediate closure of the shops and vowing to return them solely to the original purpose they were built for; to serve as convenience to the large population of traders, customers and visitors to the market, and put an end to the ugly situation where people defecate and urinate openly because of their little to no access to the toilets. 


"It is quite unfortunate the discovery I saw here, provisions made for toilets for customers and traders, not that it was converted to shops and other things in the toilets were removed, visibly you are seeing the WC there and people are using it as shops now. It is unhygienic," the Mayor said.


"According to what the Market Chairman said, the previous administrations, especially the immediate past Mayor, they converted the toilet to shops. It is a sad one that people will come to the market, they don't have access to the restrooms and you see them defecating and urinating under the staircase or the walkway causing disease, germs for other people. I will not take it and that is why I am here. I have ordered that those toilet locations should be shut down and for the immediate return to their original state," the Mayor added.


Meanwhile, the Mayor reacted to yesterday's protests led by 21 out of 23 immediate past Local Government Area Council Chairmen, Opobo/Nkoro and Bonny LGAs not inclusive. Responding to the questions by journalists who sought to know his reaction to the protests having pre-informed the police and the general public of the protest as the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) Rivers State Chapter, the Mayor said the protest was to instigate crisis in the State and urged the police to be vigilant to thwart the plans, while pointing out the low turnout showed that the people are firmly in support of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Executive Governor of Rivers State.


" You can see the low turnout of their protest across the state, what does that tell you?" It shows that Rivers people have left them. It shows that Rivers State people are no longer with them, they can no longer be deceived. 


" We are also using this medium to call on the Nigerian Police to stand by their duties and ethics of their profession that this illegal and unwanted protest if not carefully handled will snowball into something that cannot be handled when hijacked to ensure that their sinister plot for there to be unrest in the State, to cause chaos and mayhem so that they can achieve their evil agenda for a State of emergency to be declared in Rivers State, but I assure you they will be defeated."


The Mayor had in his retinue during the inspection, Honourable Tekena Gbosi, Supervisor for Transport; Honourable Kinikanwo Amadi, Supervisor for Environment and Agriculture; Honourable Wechie Ndubuisi Raymond, Chief of Staff among others.
